Augmented Reality (AR) Experience Designer

As a Product Design Engineer, you will take a critical role in developing Systems for VR, AR, or New Technology Initiatives. You will become part of a team exploring developing concepts through prototyping and into mass-production consumer electronics. You will work as part of a cross functional team requiring collaboration and curiosity in domains other than mechanical engineering. Our ideal candidate has strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, prototyping skills, CAD fluency, manufacturing process knowledge, and experience designing consumer electronics.

AR/VR Product Design Engineering Lead, Reality Labs Responsibilities:

  • Adopt a leading role in architecting complex mechanical solutions that advance the state-of-the-art as part of multi-disciplinary team
  • Model, build, test, and refine prototypes and characterization test systems
  • Work across the full product development cycle, from concept inception to shipping product
  • Effectively leverage both internal and external teams (CM/JDM/Vendors) to maximize the focus of our resources on adding value and differentiation to our products
  • Champion engineering excellence and establish the design process, influencing the organization and leadership
  • Act as a subject matter expert in specific areas such that they can mentor and educate senior team members across Reality Labs
  • Travel to external vendors up to 20%

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent industry experience
  • 8+ years of product design and development experience of complex electronics
  • Knowledge of high-volume manufacturing techniques (stamping, machining, injection molding, etc.)
  • Experience in Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), statistical tolerance analysis techniques, functional dimensioning, geometric tolerancing, and 3D/2D CAD
  • Working knowledge in material properties, such as plastics, metal, adhesive, glass, etc.
  • Testing and analysis experience (FEA, Simulation, Design of Experiments, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 10+ years of product design and development experience of handheld and/or wearable electronics for high volume manufacturing, including full systems ownership
  • Experience with architecture and systems engineering across systems including electrical, firmware, mechanical, and optical systems
  • Experience developing novel end-to-end system architectures spanning compute, displays/optics, EE, sensors, calibration, and firmware for new products from initial conception through prototyping, NPI, and production ramp
  • Experience working with partnerships teams and external partners at both a supply base and product level
  • Experience providing product feedback in addition to technical feedback on engineering and design work
  • Experience developing multiple novel consumer electronics products from a blank slate to functioning prototypes to shipping
